Starfire Protocol is a Warlock-exclusive exotic chest armor that enhances Fusion Grenades. This article explains the current mechanics and build tips.
Grenade Recovery Works While Radiant
Fusion grenade energy recovery from weapon damage now works not only with Empowering Rift/Well of Radiance, but also while Radiant.
If you can proc Radiant frequently, you don’t need to force yourself to use Empowering Rift.
Scorch Recovers Grenade Energy
Scorch from Incandescent/Ember of Singeing/Polaris Lance etc. counts as weapon damage, so while Radiant, scorch’s damage over time alone can recover your Fusion Grenade.
Radiant can be applied via artifact mod for Solar precision hits.
Bonus: This also activates Tex Balanced Stock.
Phoenix Dive Also Recovers
The in-game description says “Fusion Grenade kills grant Rift energy,” but in reality Phoenix Dive also recovers.
If you throw a grenade and immediately activate your class ability, the subsequent grenade kill will instantly recover your class ability.
Tip: Throw grenades when you want to, then use your class ability afterward for optimal efficiency.
Ignition Combo (With Ember of Ashes)
With Ember of Ashes, scorch amounts increase:
| Ability | Normal | With Ember of Ashes |
|---|---|---|
| Celestial Fire | 30 | 45 |
| Fusion Grenade | 40 | 60 |
Combined, that’s 105 scorch, enough for ignition (100 to trigger).
Loop Example
- Celestial Fire
- Fusion Grenade
- Class Ability (Hellion)
- Grenade Kill (+ corpse ignites) → Class ability recovered
- Scorched target kill recovers melee
- Melee hit grants Radiant
- Weapon damage recovers grenade
- Repeat…
Ignition Kills and Class Ability Recovery
Q. If Fusion Grenade doesn’t kill but the subsequent ignition does, does class ability recover?
A. No, it doesn’t recover.
However, even if a Fusion Grenade doesn’t kill the strong enemy it’s stuck to, nearby adds may die from the blast, and in that case your class ability will recover.
Q. If Fusion Grenade applies initial scorch, then other sources stack more scorch causing ignition kill, does class ability recover?
A. Yes, it recovers.
This may be surprising. The initial scorch rule appears unchanged.
About Information Sources
At time of posting, the “Community Research” (Clarity descriptions) visible in DIM is outdated and doesn’t mention that Radiant weapon damage recovers grenade energy.
